Mechanism
An alternative electron carrier.
At low doses methylene blue acts as an alternative electron carrier in the mitochondrial transport chain, supporting ATP production when normal pathways are impaired.
It also has antioxidant activity at these doses. The dose-response is biphasic — low doses behave very differently from high ones, which is why self-dosing is a bad idea.
Only pharmaceutical-grade material is appropriate. Industrial or aquarium-grade methylene blue is not a medication and can contain heavy-metal contaminants.

- Do not combine with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or other serotonergic medication — serotonin syndrome risk is real and serious.
- Do not use with G6PD deficiency.
- Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Expect blue-green urine. Only pharmaceutical-grade material is appropriate.

Methylene Blue questions.
No. Methylene blue is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor and combining it with SSRIs, SNRIs or MAOIs risks serotonin syndrome, which can be life-threatening. Tell your provider every medication and supplement you take.
It is excreted renally and retains its colour. Blue or blue-green urine is expected, harmless, and typically appears within hours of the first dose.
Low doses, well below those used in emergency medicine. The dose-response is biphasic — higher doses have the opposite effect on mitochondria — which is why this requires a provider and pharmaceutical-grade material.
